What are our Legal Obligations?

Employers and persons in control of workplaces throughout Australia have a common duty of care under health and safety laws to provide a safe workplace environment.

WorkCover legislation concerning electrical safety places the duty of care on the employer. No employer or principal is exempt.

Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760

AS/NZS 3760 is the standard set by Standards Australia that defines the approach that should be taken to inspect and test electrical equipment in order to maintain a safe working environment.

The Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760 is very clear about the need to ensure regular inspection and testing of all electrical equipment in the workplace.

The process of conducting these inspections is known within the industry as Testing and Tagging.

You can obtain a copy of the standard from SAI Global, Standards Australia's authorised publisher: http://infostore.saiglobal.com/store2/Details.aspx?ProductID=1436348
